What is Electronic Paper (ePaper)?
Electronic paper, also called e-paper or electronic ink display is a display technology designed to mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Unlike a conventional flat panel display, which uses a backlight to illuminate its pixels, electronic paper reflects light like ordinary paper and is capable of holding text and images indefinitely without drawing electricity, while allowing the image to be changed later. Many different technologies exist, some allowing even flexible displays to be built.
While many different applications exist, it’s properties make it especially interesting for use in electronic book (ebook) readers. Sony, Amazon and other key ebook manufacturers chose electronic paper as the display technology.
E Ink display technology
E Ink technology of electronic paper displays is currently the most advanced and widely used electronic paper technology. The majority of ebook readers currently in production use E Ink Corporation displays (including Amazon and Sony). The displays come in sizes from 5″ – 9.7″ inches with high DPI (150-200) and are capable of displaying 16 shades of gray. Every display needs a specialized E Ink controller to connect with the host microcontroller or computer.
Visionect and electronic paper displays
Visionect Electronics uses E Ink display technology in its core product – Visionect eMeni, a handheld device for use in hospitality industry. E Ink features, like long autonomy and high readability in direct sunlight, proved to be very important.
